Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will hold Orff Level I, Level II, and Level III Instruction the weeks of July 17-28, 2023, hosted by, and at the campus of, Collegiate School 279 N. Mooreland Road, Richmond, VA 23229. This course is designed to present the teaching methods of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, an innovative approach to building musicianship through the integration of music, movement, speech, and drama. Available for re-certification points. Orff Level I, Level II, an Level III.

NON-CREDIT CERTIFICATION: Use the "Tickets" tab to register for Non-Credit certification.

Instructor Bios

Brent Holl (Level III)

Brent Holl lives in Bridgewater, Virginia, and is retired after teaching General Music and Choir at S. Gordon Stewart Middle School, Stuarts Draft Middle School and Stuarts Draft Elementary School in Augusta County, Virginia for 33 years. He has done adjunct teaching for James Madison University, Blue Ridge Community College, and Radford University. He is currently teaches Orff Pedagogy for summer courses around the country. He received a B. S. degree from Bridgewater College, an M.M.Ed from James Madison University, and has completed all levels of Orff Schulwerk Certification at the University of Memphis. He presents workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. 

Mr. Holl is the owner of Beatin’ Path Publications, LLC, a publishing house dedicated to the development of high quality music resources for classroom music teachers in the design of Orff Schulwerk. Beatin’ Path Publications offers resource books for recorder, marimba ensembles, Orff ensembles, hand drumming, and general music. 

Brent is also a professional folk singer and member of The Highlander String Band. He plays guitar, and sings.

Charlie Tighe (Level II)

Charles Tighe is Adjunct Professor of Music Education at Kennesaw State University (GA) where he teaches Elementary Music Methods and an Honors College Seminar in Music and Society.  Mr. Tighe taught elementary music in the Cobb County Schools for twenty-five years, as well as heading the Atlanta Orff Levels Course from 2000-2018.  Mr. Tighe holds degrees from Kenyon College, the University of Colorado, and  Boston University.  He received his Orff training at the University of Memphis, the Orff Institute in Salzburg, and apprenticed with Randy DeLelles and Jeff Kriske at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  He has presented Orff courses and workshops throughout the United States as well as in India, Singapore, and Canada. 

Aimee Curtis Pfitzner (Level I)

Aimee Curtis Pfitzner has taught music for almost 30 years.  She holds a Masters of Music degree from UNC-Greensboro and completed Level I Orff -Schulwerk Training at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, Level II and III at University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and Master’s Level at the University of Memphis.  Aimee is a frequent presenter at music workshops and conferences in the US and internationally.  Her books, Hands to Hands, Hands to Hands Too!, Painted Music, Sing a Song, Play a Game, Playful Possibilities, and Singing Waters Dancing Flames: Music and the Elements are available from Beatin’ Path Publications.  She is passionate about music making, singing, gardening, adoption, and anything and everything creative; painting, zendoodling, making jewelry, sewing, and crafting.  When not teaching or singing, writing music or creating, she can be found musically musing on her blog, www.ofortunaorff.com. 

Kerry Lynn Nichols (Movement)

Kerri Lynn Nichols has been a music and movement instructor for over thirty-five years, teaching all ages in the public and private sectors in voice, piano, percussion, composition, and dance. Sheis an author, composer, choral director, and choreographer, presenting dozens of workshops for state, national and international conferences. Kerri Lynn is certified in dance education from the Creative Dance Institute in Seattle and is on the board of the non-profit South Sound Dance Access. She has been commissioned for community projects in children's theatre and dance companies including Kaleidoscope and Enertia. Specializing in movement to enhance brain health, Kerri Lynn is trained in Neurological Re-organization Therapy, Bartenieff Fundamentals and Coordination Pattern Theory. She founded The Olympia Peace Choir and is an educational consultant through Tree Frog Music & Dance. The core of her work is to encourage others to become aware of their abilities and gifts through the magic of music and movement.

David Hayden (Recorder)

David attended Illinois Wesleyan University, graduating in 1992 with a double major in Music and Elementary Education.I taught K-8 General Music and Choir in Illinois from 1994-96. He taught K-6 General Music and Band at Adams Elementary for 24 years and is now teaching General Music at the Longfellow and Irving Elementary Schools.David took his Orff levels training at Arizona State University in Tempe Arizona, with Carla Cose-Giallela for Level I, Marilyn Wood for Level II and Rob Amchin for Level III and Masterclass. He was certified is an Orff Schulwerk Teacher Educator in Recorder and has been teaching levels classes at Arizona State since 2016.
